Why I Hate Infinite Crisis, Part 4

What the hell? How could I have something to not like about Infinite Crisis since there hasn't been a new issue in a month or so?

Wonder Woman, that's how.

They confirmed my fear, if that's what you call it, that Greg Rucka would no longer be writing the book. For that reason alone, I hate Infinte Crisis; it's turned Wonder Woman into another tie-in book, instead of being its own title that fits in the overall tapestry. That's not saying I don't like the book. It's still good, but a certain event has kept it from being all it could be.

Now, for the silver lining. The new writer, the previously mentioned Allan Heinberg, is committed to following Greg Rucka's lead. I'll most likely try it out, if not pick up the book on a full time basis.

Of course, there's the minor chance the "two Wonder Womans" concept could screw everything up--or it might be a smoke screen to give Greg Rucka a Wonder Woman book still. DC, don't screw this up. X-Men stuff has been setting up to get really good, so you've got to prove you're not going to suddenly become allergic to my money.

(Psst, Len, it's me, again).

I've seen that complaint frequently in the blogosphere, that the OMAC battles basically kept the readers from getting any sort of payoff from the stories Rucka had been building for some time. Let's hope Heinberg is telling the truth, for your sake.

This is the reason why I hate these giant things. I had a couple posts where I discussed how Identity Crisis and War Games screwed Willingham on Robin.

Rucka is one of my favorite writers out there right now. His Wonder Woman is the reason that I got hooked on the book, especially how he tied it with the Greek mythos, as it should be.
When he was forced to write his books in a tie-in fashion, they stunk. They were forced. They took him out of his edge and made him go mainstream. Did you read the Sacrifice series? Forced. Not so good.
Its too bad he couldn't just keep his momentum.
I hope I don't see that happening with Pfeiffer on Catwoman. It just gets good, then the whole damn OYL blows crap up.
Sigh.
Nice work on the blog by the way.

Randy, glad you like the blog. I agree with everything you said except for the bit about Sacrifice. That arc, at least the parts of it he wrote, really fit his style of writing and kept with the overall direction he had going with Wonder Woman.

However, right about the time that Infinte Crisis started, I think editorial policy started to get in the way.

The best example of this is the ongoing Ares subplot. Ares kept gaining power, taking back his daughter and Circe... something was definately being built toward. (You don't just hand someone like Ares the realm of the dead and expect nothing bad to come of it.) Now, the gods have left, essentially tossing that subplot out the window.
